I hope this helps anyone out there that runs into a similar problem. If you take the steering column cover off then you can see a little metal switch/button right behind the key release button. Mine was painted red. Just push that button and run the key thru each position then remove it as normal. Thanks to those who gave me their 2 cents it helped me think a little more about how the system works and where I should go.
